Bird Island in Seychelles is a tiny 70 hectare coral cay, just a 30 minute flight from Mahe Island. Owned and staffed by Seychellois, Bird Island is an escapists dream... soft powdery white sand beaches, shady casuarina groves and blue waters! Relaxed and informal, it is a true retreat from today's busy world.

Delightful individual bungalows are spacious, comfortable and typical of the informal style of the island. Each has its own patio overlooking the gardens with the sea only a few metres away. The lounge area of the bungalow can be converted to accommodate two additional beds (2 children or 1 adult). Hot water is supplied to showers by solar panels. The main complex houses the reception, open lounge, bar and restaurant, small boutique and library.

Bird Island in Seychelles has an active environmental policy and was declared a Private Reserve in 1996. Achievements to date range from increasing the size of the Sooty Tern colony and its breeding pairs, tagging and monitoring female turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs (October-February) and monitoring the success of their nests (November-April). Having gained many eco-awards, Bird Island is committed to the promotion of conservation and sustainable development within the tourism industry and actively encourages guests to participate in the island's conservation projects.

Bird Island, as the name suggests, is famous for its bird life. Throughout the year there is always something to see, with at least 20 different species present. For the keen bird watcher, the best times to visit are October, November and April, May. These are the months most affected by changing winds when rare visitors can be blown off course and spend time resting on Bird before continuing their long migratory journey north or south. In August and September, Sooty Tern chicks start to fledge while Common Noddy Tern chicks start to hatch during early August with the majority having fledged by late September.

The weather on Bird Island is much drier and sunnier than the inner granitic islands of the Seychelles which are mountaineous. Being a coral island, as well as over 100kms north of the main island of Mahe, means that Bird has it's own distict weather patterns. Significantly, its annual rainfall is approximately half of that on Mahe, while its temperature ranges between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius depending on the month.

The introduction of nature boat tours has been a huge success with regular sightings of turtles, manta rays, dolphins and whales (weather permitting). Of course, one must not forget the famous Esmeralda. This giant tortoise is reputed to be over 200 years old! He, yes he, will often be seen trundling his way round the island!
