Praslin Island Seychelles

Praslin Island Holidays

Praslin Island is the second largest island in the Seychelles archipelago lying 37 kilometers north-east of Mahé and only 15 minutes by air or an hour by ferry.

It was on the tiny island of Praslin Seychelles (7 miles by 2), that General Gordon of Khartoum claimed to be the setting for the Garden of Eden due to the tiny but magnificent forest, the Vallee de Mai. This is now a National Park and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

At only 48.2 acres, it is one of the smallest natural World Heritage Sites. It is home to the famous Coco de Mer (coconut of the sea) tree, so named as its enormous seeds - shaped like a human pelvis - were found washed up on distant shores. In fact it is the largest and heaviest seed in the world, weighing up to 20 kilos. The Coco de Mer grows naturally only on Praslin and Curieuse islands here in the Seychelles. In the trunks and leaf canopy of the coco-de-mer and other forest trees you may be lucky to see endemic birds such as the Black Parrot or as the seychellois would say "kato nwanr", the Seychelles Bulbul or "merl", Seychelles Blue Pigeon or "pizon olande".

Getting around Praslin Island could not be easier, either hire a car, catch a local bus or rent a bicycle. The island has miles of fantastic white sand beaches and be sure to visit Anse Lazio, once rated as one of the best beaches in the world by Giorgio Armani and consistently in the top 10 listings of the world's best beaches!

Praslin is an ideal base to exploreother islands by boat such as La Digue, plus Cousin and Aride (both bird sanctuaries) and Curieuse - a breeding colony for the giant tortoise. If your Praslin stay is part of an island hopping trip, please ensure you allow plenty of time here.
